What a Way to Love a Woman

Words and music by Rhoda Daniel, © 1991

I was married once many years ago,
To a man both handsome and smart.
But he had problems I just couldn't handle,
Had to let him go to salvage my heart.
I'd hurry off early to work each mornin',
And leave him sleepin' in bed.
Each day I'd hope he'd find a job or a mission,
But he'd stay home watchin' T.V. instead!

Chorus:
What a way to love a woman
What a way to spend a life
What a way to make a livin'
Makin' nothin' but strife

The good there was was pure beautiful,
At first I loved the married game.
To have a man for my own to be lovin',
I thought better than wealth or fame.
We'd sing and play our guitars at night,
Dreamin' of what we could do.
But he spent every penny before I could make it;
We were always two paychecks too few.

Bridge:
But the good didn't last very long for us;
He couldn't keep up the disguise.
The dark side inside him took over his thinkin'
Til all I got was lies.
He'd even lie about makin' love,
promisin' night after night...
But each night he'd stay up til the wee hours of morning
watchin' T.V. until it was light.

I've never looked back - only felt thankful,
Though I hated the thought of divorce.
But his temper was dangerous, perhaps even deadly,
And his love didn't keep him from force.
I learned that my life had a worth and a value,
Outside the married game.
As much as I wanted my own man for lovin',
I just couldn't handle the pain.

(Chorus)

Inspiration

What a Way to Love a Woman is an autobiographical low-keyed look at spousal abuse. (Turned out he was bi-polar, which has become almost epidemic out there.) Writing this song was a completely cathartic experience. I've always thought it should be sung by one of our neat country ladies who could make a great hit of it. I can think of half a dozen I bet would do it justice! And I'm sure other women would relate as well.

Acknowldgements

I want to thank both Robb Tripp and Walt Harrah for the wonderful job they both did to make this album a reality. I am grateful to you both; you are both gifted producers. And a special thank you to all the great musicians and arrangers who were a part of this project.

The original production under Robb Tripp in TN was titled: Country Christian and produced in the Nashville area with a live band of superb musicians. I could tell them what I was hearing for each song and they not only gave me what I asked, but way beyond as well.

Three songs were produced in CA with Walt Harrah. Besides being a producer, he is also a talented singer. I was delighted when he agreed to be the singer on both Fire Insurance (about accepting Jesus), and The Wolves Are Out (about the importance of judging by fruits). He was also my duet partner in 45 & Holding (about always putting God off). He's also particularly gifted at harmony. He could lay down 4 harmony tracks in succession without even one sour or missed note.
