The Wolves Are Out

Music and lyrics by Rhoda Daniel, © 1995

It is written that the devil comes, but not in devil's clothes.
He stalks about in clothes of light, lying as he goes.
To catch a tasty girl once, he wore a grandma's clothes,
Speaking softly words of love, to better get his goals!

Chorus:
The wolves are out, the sheep are loose,
The game is getting tight.
You'd better learn your Shepherd's words,
And walk in their light!

Two little pigs did what they chose. Easy was their way.
But when the devil-wolf came by, it was hell they had to pay!
One little pig did what he should; he built upon the rock.
And when the devil-wolf came by, it was he that got the shock!

(Chorus)

Most folks know if they think at all that wolves are smarter than sheep.
But sheeps instincts are mostly good, they know wolves want them to eat!
But through the years the wolves have saved sheepskins by the scores,
And they slip them on to run with the sheep, right through the sheepfold doors!

(Chorus)

You've got to know the devil comes, but not in devil's clothes.
He stalks about in clothes of light, lying as he goes.
He sends his wolves in sheepskin clothes, the better to deceive.
He knows few judge by the fruits of the book, so lies they will believe!

(Chorus)

Inspiration

The Wolves Are Out is about the importance of judging by fruits, and is one of the more unusual songs I've written. I was upset with my last fiance at the time and was writing a wolf song about him when The Holy Spirit flipped it around as I wrote it. It includes several of our childhood fairy tales featuring a wolf to illustrate the importance of judging rightly the first time.

Acknowldgements

I want to thank both Robb Tripp and Walt Harrah for the wonderful job they both did to make this album a reality. I am grateful to you both; you are both gifted producers. And a special thank you to all the great musicians and arrangers who were a part of this project.

The original production under Robb Tripp in TN was titled: Country Christian and produced in the Nashville area with a live band of superb musicians. I could tell them what I was hearing for each song and they not only gave me what I asked, but way beyond as well.

Three songs were produced in CA with Walt Harrah. Besides being a producer, he is also a talented singer. I was delighted when he agreed to be the singer on both Fire Insurance (about accepting Jesus), and The Wolves Are Out (about the importance of judging by fruits). He was also my duet partner in 45 & Holding (about always putting God off). He's also particularly gifted at harmony. He could lay down 4 harmony tracks in succession without even one sour or missed note.
